Paul George Trade Rumors: Warriors Reportedly Offered Chris Paul and Wiggins in Deal Before Opt-Out

usa today

The Golden State Warriors reportedly made several trade offers to the Los Angeles Clippers for Paul George before he chose to opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent. According to Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, the Warriors' offers included various combinations of Chris Paul, Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, and a future first-round pick. While the Warriors were clear that they would not trade all these pieces, they believed they had presented the Clippers with acceptable trade variations. Additionally, Golden State was prepared to offer George a new max contract extension, contingent on him opting into the final year of his current deal.

George has opted out and will explore the free-agent market. Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported that George is set to meet with the Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Orlando Magic at the start of free agency. The Sixers and Magic both have the cap space to sign George outright.

The Clippers and George have been negotiating an extension for months with little success. George is insisting on a four-year maximum deal, while the Clippers have offered a three-year, $149.7 million extension, similar to the one Kawhi Leonard signed in January. This standoff has created a game of chicken, with the Clippers on the verge of losing George for nothing if they don't meet his demands as free agency looms.

usa today

Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank told reporters the team wants to retain George but must consider the financial ramifications of the new collective bargaining agreement.

"This is a business, and the reality of the new CBA impacts teams like us," Frank said. "When your better players are in their 30s and you're trying to build a sustainable roster, it impacts it.

"If there was no CBA, with [team owner] Steve Ballmer, it would be carte blanche. With the new CBA, it's not even about the money; it's about how you build a sustainable roster and maintain your tools to have transactional flexibility. And with that comes really, really hard decisions."

As currently constituted, the Clippers are about $54.1 million below the first tax apron and $65 million below the second apron. Re-signing Paul George would bring them close to the first apron, not even considering the potential return of James Harden. Bringing back both Harden and George would push the Clippers well past the second apron, severely limiting their roster flexibility moving forward.

The CBA has also created a financial squeeze for the Warriors, likely leading to Klay Thompson leaving in free agency this summer primarily for financial reasons. Despite regularly being the NBA's most expensive team, owner Joe Lacob has expressed a desire to avoid the tax.

Missing out on George puts the Warriors at a critical juncture. They could easily get under the tax by waiving Chris Paul's $30 million contract, but doing so would likely doom them to the lottery for the foreseeable future.

Biden Struggles in First 2024 Presidential Debate Against Trump

Biden Struggles in First 2024 Presidential Debate Against Trump.

The current president appeared to struggle with his speech, while Republican Trump reiterated multiple false statements.

USA Today

28 jun 2024

In the first debate of the 2024 United States presidential race, President Joe Biden and Donald Trump faced off in a highly anticipated match-up, with the race so far being very close. Despite making the opening statement in Thursday’s event, Biden had some difficulty articulating his points clearly at several moments, occasionally fumbling for his words.
Meanwhile, Trump seized the moment to highlight Biden’s perceived weaknesses, stoking fears about immigration and the economy.

He also sidestepped questions about whether he would accept the results of the November 5 presidential election, stating he would only do so if it was “fair” and “free” while reiterating false claims that the 2020 election was rigged.

“The fraud and everything else was ridiculous,” he remarked, casting doubt on President Biden’s 2020 victory.

Trump is currently facing two criminal indictments – one in Georgia and another in Washington, DC – for his alleged attempts to overturn those election results.

USA Today

Rusty on stage.

On Thursday evening, the debate was held at the CNN news network's studios in Atlanta, Georgia. This event marked the first time since October 2020 that the two candidates had faced each other on the debate stage.

Many political observers speculated that they might be out of practice, as neither had participated in a public debate for several years.

Biden spent the week leading up to the debate at Camp David in Maryland, a presidential retreat where aides helped him prepare with mock setups. Meanwhile, Trump maintained his schedule of rallies. However, Biden appeared unsteady as he approached the podium, muttering briefly.

Nevertheless, when Biden faced the first question of the night, he came out swinging, aiming to undermine Trump’s popularity by criticizing his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We faced an economy in free fall," Biden addressed the mostly empty room, moderated by CNN's Dana Bash and Jake Tapper. "By the time he left, chaos ensued. We had chaos. We had to rebuild."

He also ridiculed Trump’s dismissive stance on COVID-19 precautions, likening it to dangerous online misinformation about cures: "Just inject a little bleach into your arm, and you’ll be alright."

When given the opportunity to respond, Trump's opening remarks showcased his trademark hyperbole, a characteristic for which the Republican candidate has gained recognition.

"We had the greatest economy in the history of our country. We've never seen such success before. Everyone was astounded by it. Other countries were trying to emulate us," Trump stated in his opening remarks, later adding with a quip, "Everything was going incredibly well."

USA Today

"An intense evening unfolded amidst a fiercely contested race."

The evening marked a pivotal moment for both Trump and Biden, each championing contrasting visions for the future of the United States. Trump insinuated a decline under Biden's leadership, while Biden vigorously defended America's global position.

"I've never heard a president speak like this before. We are the envy of the world. Tell me which major country wouldn't trade places with the United States of America," Biden asserted at one juncture.

"No one doubts our strength. No one dares to challenge us. Nobody," he added emphatically.

In response, Trump countered at one juncture, "Joe, our nation is crumbling while we waste time on this debate." Leading up to Thursday's debate, polls indicated a close race between Trump and Biden, with the Republican slightly ahead. According to a survey by The New York Times and Siena College on the eve of the event, Trump had nearly 48 percent support, nearly four points ahead of Biden's approximately 44 percent. Analysts suggested that the debate could widen this gap. "Since the debate ended, I've been talking to Republicans and Democrats," reported Al Jazeera correspondent Alan Fisher. "The overwhelming consensus is that this was a strong night for Donald Trump."

Fisher emphasized the significance of stage presence, noting that Trump reiterated numerous campaign rally talking points.

"Joe Biden called out Donald Trump for his lies, falsehoods, and exaggerations—things that simply aren't true," Fisher explained. "However, Trump appeared commanding, while Biden often failed to complete thoughts and seemed confused on certain points. It was a rough night for him."

Fisher also highlighted that the debate would raise further questions about Biden's age, given he is 81 years old compared to his 78-year-old Republican opponent. "This performance won't ease those concerns," Fisher concluded.

An extraordinary occurrence with familiar talking points.

The debate was notably unconventional for several reasons, particularly due to its unusually early scheduling. Both Biden and Trump advocated for moving the first presidential debate of the election cycle to June to prevent it from coinciding with early voting, which commences in some states as early as September.

This decision meant that the inaugural debate of 2024 occurred even before the major party conventions, where the candidates are formally designated as the Democratic and Republican nominees.

In another break from tradition, Biden and Trump circumvented the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, opting instead to organize the debates themselves and directly negotiate with CNN to host them.

Thursday's debate marked only the first of two presidential debates scheduled for this year, with political observers hoping Biden can improve upon his inaugural debate performance before the second debate on September 10.

During the debate, Trump vigorously criticized Biden's stance on immigration, employing inflammatory anti-immigrant language to stoke fears of violence.

"He supports open borders. He either wants our country to be destroyed or he wants these people as voters," Trump asserted regarding Biden's immigration policies.

In response, Biden sought to debunk the association between immigration and crime, citing studies that consistently show immigrants, on average, commit fewer crimes than native-born US citizens.

Biden responded to Trump's claims by addressing the prevalence of young women being raped by their in-laws or spouses. He also rebutted Trump's false statements about abortion, clarifying, "You're lying. That is not true. We are not for late-term abortion, period."
USA Today

Democrats rally around the president.

Despite critiques of Biden’s debate performance, Democrats swiftly rallied behind the president in the aftermath, reiterating claims that Trump poses a fundamental threat to US democracy.

"You don't abandon ship over one performance. What kind of party would do that?" remarked California Governor Gavin Newsom when asked about Biden stepping down. "This president has delivered. It's our turn to deliver for him now."

Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden’s running mate, acknowledged initial challenges but highlighted a strong finish by the president.

"Yes, there was a slow start, but he finished strong," she told CNN in an interview.

Nevertheless, Al Jazeera correspondent Fisher reported murmurs within the party about exploring alternative candidates if Biden's electoral viability came into question.

"He mentioned that Joe Biden's advantage lies in the five-month window until the election, allowing room for corrective actions. However, the uncertainty surrounds how these issues will be addressed, as this development has dramatically altered the course of the race."

This Week’s Villain of Westeros: The Guy Who Did … Uh … That

 House of the Dragon.

This Week’s Villain of Westeros: The Guy Who Did … Uh … That

House of the Dragon finds a new way to be shocking in its Season 2 premiere.

House of the Dragon.

Welcome back to Worst Person in Westeros! After each episode of House of the Dragon, Slate writers gather to answer a crucial question: Who is the worst person in Westeros? This week, senior editor Sam Adams and associate writer Nadira Goffe take on the challenge.

Sam Adams: Well, hello there. It's been a whopping 22 months since we last gathered to crown the worst person from the very first episode of House of the Dragon. Even in the streaming era, that's a long wait between seasons, so I decided to jump right into the Season 2 premiere without any prior recap. Big mistake. From the very first scene, I was lost—back in the familiar courtyard of Winterfell and then off to the Wall for a baffling conversation between two unrecognizable characters. Not even the introductory recap could help. I spent quite a bit of time poring over the Dance of the Dragons article on the A Song of Ice and Fire Wiki to get my bearings. This experience brings up a key issue: How can we determine the worst person in Westeros if we can’t even recognize the players? Nadira, how did you find your way back into the world of House of the Dragon?

House of the Dragon.

Nadira Goffe:  I tried to rewatch the episode but only managed about four minutes before realizing I had forgotten that Young Penn Badgley (aka Harry Collett) was actually Rhaenyra’s son, Jacaerys. So, I did what I always do in such situations and turned to YouTube for a thorough recap (shoutout to Man of Recaps for years of saving my brain). Now I'm fully caught up—and so is House of the Dragon, which conveniently picks up right where it left off. It’s been just days since Aemond accidentally killed Rhaenyra’s youngest son, Lucerys, eliminating any hope of avoiding an all-out war of dragonfire and brimstone. Now, Rhaenyra is seeking proof of death while her allies make preparations, and once she finds it, she demands Aemond's head. They already took one of his eyes; what’s another head (… and the rest of it)? Daemon is eager to fulfill this request while #TeamRhaenyra strengthens their alliances. Meanwhile, in King’s Landing, Alicent is trying to control her troublesome sons who hold the highest seats of power, all while enjoying the company of her sidepiece, Ser Criston Cole. Alicent’s father, Otto—who started this entire feud by setting Alicent and Rhaenyra against each other in their youth—is ensuring there are no more mistakes until the Hightowers are the uncontested rulers of the realm. Aemond remains in denial about his massive mistake, adopting an "All's fair in love and the war you created, Mom" mentality. In summary, most everyone in Westeros is awful. I have little sympathy for anyone except the grieving Rhaenyra and, particularly, young Jace, who learns about his brother’s murder. However, the abundance of terrible characters provides plenty of candidates for the title of worst person in Westeros. I have my own suspicions, but let's discuss our top suspects for the week. What did you think of Daemon and Aemond in this episode? To me, they seem like two sides of the same coin—sharing the same letters in their names doesn’t help—and both showed a disturbing level of callousness (Daemon towards Rhaenyra’s grief and Aemond towards his past wrongdoings) that was pretty icky, in my opinion.

Adams:  Let’s start with Aemond, shall we? He’s arguably the most thoroughly, almost comically, evil character in House of the Dragon—a sneering, one-eyed villain without a single redeeming quality. Sure, he didn't intentionally kill his nephew, plunging the realm into the brink of a terrible conflict; yet, he doesn’t seem particularly remorseful about it either. Despite being a strong contender for the title of Worst Person in Westeros, I don't think he claims that title this week. His worst offense is barging into the small council unannounced and making it clear he's eager for war—pretty obnoxious, but not quite on par with the truly horrific acts he’s capable of. Strategically speaking, we should keep him in reserve for a week when his monstrous nature is more prominently on display.

I tend to view Daemon similarly—when someone is perpetually evil, it becomes somewhat monotonous. However, he does devise a particularly vile scheme this week. But before diving into that, let's consider another contender from their bloodline: Aemond’s brother, the newly crowned King Aegon. In his own way, Aegon is trying his best. Named after Aegon the Conqueror, Aegon II is burdened with the far less imposing title of Aegon the Magnanimous, though his so-called generosity stems largely from his weakness. (He’s also not the sharpest tool in the shed; he doesn’t even know what “magnanimous” means.) When commoners present their petitions, his instinct is to grant all their requests, not out of justice, but from a desire to be liked. His father, Viserys, while not the most commanding ruler, at least had a moral compass. Aegon, however, seems to take direction from whoever spoke to him last. And we know how much King’s Landing’s ambitious schemers love a malleable monarch. This week, Aegon is more of a slimy weasel than an outright terror: his main actions are inviting a toddler to the small council and humiliating Tyland Lannister when the latter points out that the eve of war is an inopportune time for Bring Your Princeling to Work Day. He’s obnoxious, but his behavior feels like it’s laying the groundwork for future misdeeds. What about you, Nadira? Who's your least favorite Targaryen this week?

Goffe: If incompetence and annoyance of the sniveling variety were the criteria, Aegon would undoubtedly take the crown. Watching Tyland Lannister increasingly tormented by a toddler wearing a 613 lace-front 18-inch wig is entertaining. Despite Aegon being my least favorite Targaryen this week, his status as the world's biggest pushover on the world's biggest seat isn't enough to label him the "worst." So, we need to find another Westerosi baddie to crown.

I'm tempted to choose Otto, but most of his scheming is residual at this point. Alicent, hilariously, comes off like an exhausted mother just trying to do her best—who among us can't relate? I have my eyes on a few characters in the background: Larys Strong is the most entertaining schemer to me. He proved his ruthless nature by orchestrating the deaths of his own father and brother last season, but he's barely in this episode. This leads to my main complaint about the show: plenty of villains are bad, but hardly any are badass!

It might be worth diving into Daemon’s terrible plot that you mentioned and considering that this week’s worst person might not be a Targaryen at all. To satisfy his niece-wife, Daemon plots to kill Aemond by hiring two randoms—the classic duo of the muscle and the navigator—to sneak into the palace and assassinate the prince. And, well, things don't go as planned. What do you make of the episode’s big fiasco?

Euro 2024 updates: Germany thrash Scotland in record win.........

USA Today

**Germany Dominates Scotland in Record-Breaking Euro 2024 Opener**

MUNICH -- Hosts Germany, led by standout performances from Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, achieved the most decisive opening game victory in European Championship history, defeating Scotland 5-1 in their Euro 2024 opener.

Musiala and Wirtz, both 21 and heralded as the future of German football, each scored early goals that set the tone for a dominant performance by Julian Nagelsmann's squad. Scotland's hopes of a comeback were dashed when defender Ryan Porteous was sent off in the 42nd minute for a studs-up challenge on Ílkay Gündogan. The incident, reviewed by VAR, resulted in a penalty for Germany and a red card for Porteous, further cementing Germany's control over the match.

Germany entered the tournament as one of the favorites, alongside France, England, and Portugal, despite a turbulent period under coach Julian Nagelsmann and his sacked predecessor, Hansi Flick. The team's recent history of early exits—failing to advance past the group stage in the last two World Cups and a round-of-16 defeat to England at Euro 2020—had raised concerns about their prospects. However, the apprehension among the home supporters quickly dissipated within the first 10 minutes of the match. Bayer Leverkusen's young star, Florian Wirtz, scored the opening goal after a seamless buildup involving Toni Kroos, Ilkay Gundogan, and Joshua Kimmich, setting a confident tone for the game.

USA Today

Bayern Munich forward Jamal Musiala doubled Germany's lead in the 19th minute after linking up with Kai Havertz. With the score at 2-0, Germany appeared to have the match under control, and they solidified their dominance when Havertz scored from the penalty spot following Porteous's foul on Gundogan.
Scotland, reduced to 10 men and facing upcoming group games against Switzerland and Hungary, saw coach Steve Clarke opt for damage limitation in the second half by substituting forward Ché Adams with defender Grant Hanley. This change helped mitigate the pressure, though Scotland remained largely outplayed by the hosts. Niclas Füllkrug added a fourth goal for Germany in the 68th minute, and moments later, he thought he had made it 5-0, but VAR ruled it out for offside.

An own goal by Antonio Rüdiger in the 87th minute gave the sizable contingent of Scotland fans something to celebrate, and they did so exuberantly. However, Emre Can sealed a comprehensive victory for Germany, scoring their fifth goal in the final minute of stoppage time. -- Mark Ogden

Mbappémania comes to Germany.

USA Today

MUNICH -- On Thursday, the French national team held a training session at Paderborn SC's stadium, drawing a crowd of 4,000 enthusiastic fans. The venue, located just 15 minutes from their base in Bad Lippspringe, was buzzing with excitement.

The fans were there for one main reason: to see Kylian Mbappé. Although the Real Madrid forward was sidelined due to minor back and knee pains, which kept him from participating in the training session, he made a memorable appearance. Coach Didier Deschamps wasn't overly concerned about Mbappé's condition, and the player received treatment from the physios before joining the team for the final 30 minutes of the session. His presence on the touchline sent the stadium into a frenzy.

The French Football Federation reported an overwhelming 100,000 ticket requests for this open session, with the 4,000 available tickets selling out in just four minutes. While Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembélé received some cheers, it was the French captain, Mbappé, who stole the show. His broad smile lit up the afternoon as he stayed afterward to take photos and sign autographs, thrilling dozens of young fans chanting his name.

England Draws Inspiration from Kim Kardashian. Wait, What?

BLANKENHAIN, Germany -- In their relentless pursuit of marginal gains to secure their first men's trophy in 58 years, England's national football team has taken an unexpected cue from the likes of Kim Kardashian, Prince Harry, and Jennifer Aniston. Yes, really.

The Three Lions have been seen wearing Oura Rings, a wellness tracker popular among celebrities, during their initial training sessions at the Weimarer Land Spa & Golf Resort.

Priced between $299 and $549, plus a $5.99 monthly subscription fee, the Oura Ring monitors sleep, body temperature, and heart rate variability. Even manager Gareth Southgate has been spotted wearing one on his index finger.

Oura, which also counts the U.S. Army among its clients, claims that its users experience an 87% improvement in overall health. England will certainly be hopeful that this technology can help them overcome various challenges and finally triumph in Euro 2024. -- James Olley

Scotland's Tartan Army Marches On.

**MUNICH** — After a 23-year hiatus, Scotland made their long-awaited return to a major tournament at the COVID-19-delayed Euro 2020 in 2021. With two games held in Scotland and one in front of 22,500 fans at a restricted-capacity Wembley, the Tartan Army couldn't travel abroad in their usual massive numbers.

This year in Germany, however, they more than made up for it. UEFA anticipated over 100,000 Scots to journey for the group stage, but that estimate seems to have fallen short. Train stations and airports have been awash with a sea of dark blue as the influx of kilt-wearing fans has taken over Munich. The city's bars, cafes, restaurants, and even the Englischer Garten have been overtaken by the boisterous Scottish supporters.

Scotland has never advanced beyond the group stage of a World Cup or European Championship. Should they achieve that milestone this time, it could trigger the largest movement of Scots since the days of Braveheart. — Ogden

Group A: Hungary vs. Switzerland (Cologne, 3 p.m. CEST / 9 a.m. ET)
Odds (via ESPNBET): Hungary +400, Draw +280, Switzerland -160

COLOGNE -- Hungary and Switzerland face off in Cologne on Saturday to kick off their campaigns, which are being viewed quite differently in their respective countries.

Switzerland's path to the tournament was less than stellar, securing second place in their group after winning only four out of ten matches against Romania, Israel, Belarus, Kosovo, and Andorra. This has tempered expectations for their performance in Germany, despite Granit Xhaka's exceptional domestic season. The former Arsenal midfielder played a crucial role in Bayer Leverkusen's historic Bundesliga title win and their German Cup triumph, both achieved without a single defeat.
In contrast, Hungary has emerged as a popular dark horse pick for the tournament. Under the guidance of popular coach Marco Rossi, they went unbeaten through qualifying. There is optimism that Hungary can progress from Group A and make a significant impact in the knockout stages. Recent victories over Germany and England in the UEFA Nations League have served as a stark warning to their European competitors. -- Dawson

Group B: Spain vs. Croatia (Berlin, 6 p.m. CEST / 12 p.m. ET).

BERLIN -- Spain and Croatia clash at Olympiastadion, both aiming to reach the final on July 14. Despite not being favorites this year, both teams have a strong tournament history and believe they can contend for the title.

A fast start in this group, which also includes Italy and Albania, will be crucial for their ambitions. The midfield battle will be pivotal, with Croatia, who finished third at the Qatar World Cup, likely relying on the experienced trio of Luka Modrić, Marcelo Brozović, and Mateo Kovačić. They face a challenge from Spain's Rodri, Pedri, and either Fabián Ruiz or Mikel Merino.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this match will be the performance of Spain's young wingers. Lamine Yamal, set to become the youngest player ever in the men's Euros at 16 if he plays, along with Nico Williams, provide the three-time European champions with a directness and cutting edge they have often lacked in recent finals.

Group B: Italy vs. Albania (Dortmund, 9 p.m. CEST / 3 p.m. ET).

DORTMUND -- Italy, despite missing the past two World Cups, secured a triumphant victory at the last Euros. The lead-up to this tournament has been turbulent, with Roberto Mancini's sudden departure last year to manage Saudi Arabia. Luciano Spalletti now takes charge of a squad blending seasoned players with promising young talent.

Italy faces injury concerns with Davide Frattesi, Nicolò Barella, and Nicolo Fagioli, the latter fresh from a seven-month suspension for betting on football. However, Spalletti remains hopeful of a full squad selection. Gianluca Scamacca is poised to lead the attack after a prolific season with Atalanta, while tactical decisions between a three or four-man defense are yet to be finalized.

In pre-tournament press conferences, Italy exudes quiet confidence in their prospects at Germany, where they lifted the World Cup in 2006. Nevertheless, they anticipate a challenging opener against Albania, managed by Sylvinho with assistant coaches Pablo Zabaleta and Doriva. Italy's captain Gianluigi Donnarumma labels the match a potential "banana skin," wary of Albania's pacey threats.

Albania boasts a contingent of Italy-based players including Inter Milan's Kristjan Asllani, enhancing their belief of causing an upset. Despite historical setbacks, including four defeats against Italy, Albania remains bolstered by a strong core featuring Ylber Ramadani of Lecce, Nedim Bajrami of Sassuolo in midfield, Berat Djimsiti from Atalanta in defense, and Chelsea's Armando Broja up front. -- Hamilton
